About The Brewery
Kuroshio (坂下酒造)
Founded in 1925 (Taisho 14) on Hachijo Island—the historic cradle of shochu in the Izu Islands—Sakashita Shuzo is one of the island's most boutique distilleries. After a temporary hiatus following the passing of the former Master Brewer, production was proudly revived in January 2021. Their flagship brand, "Kuroshio," is crafted from two-row barley and sweet potato, distilled at atmospheric pressure using white koji. It perfectly balances the toasty aroma of barley with the natural sweetness of potato, earning the Excellence Award at the 2020 Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau Liquor Competition. For the best experience, try it "Maewari" style—pre-mixed with water and gently warmed—to further unlock its fragrant barley notes.
