The Gift from Mt. Chokai
Standing at 2,230 meters, Mt. Chokai—the pride of Akita—is a vast and delicate sanctuary of nature. With its ever-changing scenery, this mountain is deeply woven into the fabric of local life. It is from the synergy of Mt. Chokai’s pristine water and carefully selected rice that "Bishu Tenju" is born.
In the Nakajimadai Forest of Mt. Chokai, lush beech forests act as a natural filtration system, purifying the water to its crystalline state. As this is natural spring water, the temperature remains a constant 7°C year-round. This abundance of cool, stable-temperature water allows for the existence of the "Chokai Marimo"—a rare species of moss ball found nowhere else in the world and designated as a prefectural natural monument.
The perennial snows of Mt. Chokai melt into pristine underground streams that surge forth from the earth. Only through this sacred water can the sake of Tenju be truly realized.

Gentle Moments Nurtured by the Blessings
Yashima-machi in Yurihonjo City, home to Tenju Shuzo, is a picturesque town cradled by the majestic nature of Mt. Chokai. The air here is exceptionally crisp, and at night, you can witness a celestial display officially recognized as the second most beautiful starry sky in Japan.
Taking advantage of the distinct basin climate with significant temperature fluctuations, the region thrives in rice cultivation and dairy farming. The premium sake rices used by Tenju—Sake Komachi and Miyama Nishiki—are exclusively grown within this pristine environment. Additionally, the Yurihara Highland is famous for its Jersey cattle; the rich, naturally sweet Jersey milk is a local specialty, making their soft-serve ice cream a must-try for visitors.
With its breathtaking natural surroundings, abundant local delicacies, and the simple, warm-hearted nature of its people, this is a charming town where time seems to flow with a gentle, unhurried grace.
