The Story
300 Years of Handcrafted Excellence
Founded in 1712 during the mid-Edo period, Onuma Shuzoten took root in Murata-cho, a town then flourishing as a hub for the safflower trade. Over 300 years later, the brewery continues to evolve. Today, within its venerable traditions, the vigorous handiwork of a younger generation has begun to thrive. It is a masterful fusion of historical depth and modern sensibility, ensuring that every drop pulses with renewed energy.
The Sake
A Governor's Tribute to Perfection
Originally sold under the brand "Fuji Masamune," the brewery's fate changed in 1870. Moved by the exceptional flavor during a visit, the first governor of Miyagi Prefecture, Masanao Matsudaira, renamed the sake "Kenkon-ichi"—a wish for it to be the "Number One in Heaven and Earth." To honor this prestigious name, the brewery pursues the ideal form of sake with unyielding discipline. This noble pride is distilled into a craft that produces sake often described as "exquisitely beautiful."
The Sake
Turning Table Rice into Liquid Art
Guided by the belief that "brewing rooted in the local land leads to a sake loved by the locals," Onuma Shuzoten focuses on using Sasanishiki, a premium Miyagi table rice. By mastering the difficult art of brewing with eating rice, they have turned it into the brewery's unique identity. Each sip evokes images of the local landscape and the faces of the farmers. This is more than sake; it is a heartfelt tribute to the land, capturing the soul of Miyagi in every glass.
