The Story

A Brewery Born of Mountain Asceticism

Standing tall over the Shonai Plain in Yamagata Prefecture is Mt. Chokai, Tohoku’s premier independent peak. The Kamibarabioka district, nestled before the gates of the sacred Omonoimi Shrine, once flourished as a spiritual hub for Shugendo (mountain asceticism). Sugisami’s roots date back to the Edo period, deeply intertwined with this ancient spiritual tradition, before being formally established in 1923. Across the ages, this brewery has remained a steadfast guardian of handmade quality, deeply rooted in the faith of the sacred mountain.

The Sake

A Symphony of Nine Craftsmen

The lifeblood of Sugisami is the pristine sub-surface water originating from the ancient glaciers of Mt. Chokai. This medium-soft water is clean and consistent, perfect for brewing sake with a refined, timeless clarity. With a production of only 500 koku (approx. 50,000 bottles), it is one of the smallest breweries in Japan. Yet, it is staffed by nine dedicated craftsmen—a high concentration of skill for such a small scale. This allows for an intensity of manual labor that defines their mission: to brew a sake that feels like a lifelong companion, one you can never tire of.

Pairing Premium Rice with Mountain and Sea

Yuza-machi, located at the northern edge of the Shonai Plain, is renowned for producing some of Japan's finest rice. Facing the Sea of Japan and backed by Mt. Chokai, it is a land blessed with both alpine treasures and maritime abundance. Sugisami is crafted to be the perfect conduit for these local gifts. We invite you to experience Sugisami alongside traditional local cuisine. In every sip of crisp flavor and smooth finish, you taste the golden paddies and the blue horizon of Yuza-machi.
